After serving 20 years in the military, I found myself in an unknown world, determined to shed the life I had dedicated everything to and forge my own path for once. As luck would have it, I fell into journalism and became a syndicated political commentator featured on numerous platforms and various radio talk shows. What I didn’t know was that my life and that of my husband and children were headed for an inevitable collision course with my generational trauma. However, thanks to our faith, determination, and the steadfast support of my husband, we weathered the hurricane that was my family. I emerged an orphan, estranged from the family I had known for 40 years. But in that loss, I found a new kind of freedom-the freedom to be who I am, and not chase what others wanted me to be.
